Hypnosis Discussion Network - Tracey Grist

by Nick Ebdon & Tracey Grist | Episode 6: Tracy Grist

In this episode Nick and Tracey open the lid on what is is that the National Council for Hypnotherapy does as a not-for-profit association trying to maintain standards and professionalism within the industry, as well as Tracey’s collaboration and contributions to this year’s UK Hypnosis Convention.

Tracey also discusses the user friendliness of being in an ethical Professional organisation that has your back and understands the trials of being a Hypnotherapist in full time practice in the UK.

About Tracy

A full time hypnotherapist trained in counselling, hypnosis, hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) Tracey has been in practice for the last decade. Originally with locations throughout London including Harley Street she has now settled in practice, south of the river, in Balham.

Tracey became Chairman of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) in 2016, a role she feels passionate about; setting and upholding standards in the Hypnotherapy profession.  She also trains and assesses students of hypnotherapy to the Diploma standard of the National Council of Further Education (NCFE).

S1. E5: Andrew Austin

For the fifth instalment, Nick has the pleasure of welcoming Andrew Austin on to discuss amongst other things; why people choose to become therapists, the scale of the intellectual laziness within the helping professions, status obsessions, how (too) many view therapy and mental health as quasi-religions, and much, much more…

Hypnosis Discussion Network - Andrew Austin

by Nick Ebdon & Andrew Austin | Episode 5: Andrew Austin

Andrew brings a refreshing honesty to the podcast as he explores with Nick his pet peeves, the state of the helping professions and the broader issues and problems society is facing in the every growing monetisation of the mental health industry.
This interview may hit a nerve, and that’s what makes it fascinating and a must-listen to exchange of ideas.

About Andrew

With a private practice in West Sussex, England, Andrew has a specialist interest in “schizophrenias” and anxiety and has been heavily influenced by the writings of notables such as R.D. Laing and Thomas Szasz. He has developed two bodies of work, “Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT)” and “Metaphors of Movement (MoM).” IEMT is a rapidly growing therapeutic modality that has some analogies to EMDR, whilst Metaphors of Movement is a model for exploring the hidden mind which has many therapeutic applications. Both have become recognised modalities and are listed in the Sage Encyclopedia of Theory of Counseling and Psychotherapy.

Andrew T. Austin is more than willing to speak out about the narcissism that is rife within the therapeutic professions and, as such, draws a lot of negative commentaries, especially from the “NLP community” described by Austin as “rotten to its very core.”

Episode four is a special one as Nick talks to respected hypnotherapist and friend Gary Turner. Strap yourself in as it is a long one!

Hypnosis Discussion Network - Gary Turner

by Nick Ebdon & Gary Turner | Episode 4: Gary Turner

Gary asks:
What is professionalism?
Why should we question what we do?
How can we be more professional?
Are all professions as unprofessional as hypnotherapy?
Nick and Gary get down to brass tacks touching on all of the above and topics such as the importance of reflective practice, why it is never wrong to question, especially teaching, and also ourselves, and so much more.

This epsiode is a long but informative conversation between the two admins of the Hypnosis Discussion Network facebook group.

About Gary

Gary describes himself as – Big, ugly, talk the talk, yet walk the walk. A bully’s worst nightmare, a geek who can look after himself. Often termed the credible hulk as I back up my rage with facts and figures, letting data talk for itself. Ex-professional sportsman within combat sports, won quite a bit, still going, 47 years after I started, despite now having prosthetics in my leg. PhD student, parent discipline medical sociology, involving the brain as a basis of behaviour and sport policy. Hypnotherapist, behavioural change worker, therapist, coach, mentor, developer of online training and courses. Regular guest and contracted lecturer at University to sports psychologists, sports science, and sports management students. Neurodiverse and ADHD – who’d have guessed. Wanting to drive professionalism over unprofessionalism. Not a fan of wasted time. Have a husky who I used to race ultramarathons, with and a new labrador pup. Want to be the best at everything I do, happy in the knowledge I never will be, but that isn’t going to stop me trying. Love humour, especially puns, and bad, really bad, dad jokes.
